Introduction to Project Based Learning (PBL)

Ready to take learning to the next level? This special four-session Project-Based Learning (PBL) course is designed for rising 5th graders of all learning styles—including gifted students, on-level learners, and those needing extra support. Students will dive into a real-world design challenge while reinforcing key 4th grade academic standards and previewing 5th grade routines.

Over two full days (morning and afternoon sessions), students will research, design, and build a tiny home model for a specific prospective client. Through this hands-on project, students will:

  • Practice close reading strategies, including the Three Reads Protocol, to identify main ideas, draw conclusions, and make inferences

  • Use claim-evidence-reasoning to write a persuasive business letter

  • Strengthen math skills in number sense, measurement, and geometry

  • Apply the Engineering Design Process to bring their project to life

  • Organize ideas through note-taking, project planning, and collaborative work

The schedule mirrors a typical school day, helping ease the transition to upper-grade routines.  There will be breaks for snack and lunch (food not provided).

Important Notes:

  • Class is capped at 10 students

  • Full attendance at all 4 sessions (AM & PM) is required to complete the project

This is an exciting opportunity for students to build confidence, sharpen academic skills, and experience what it’s like to think, work, and problem-solve like a 5th grader.
